EDWARDSVILLE, IL – For the first time in program history the University of Indianapolis men's basketball team will fight for a GLVC Championship title. The six-seeded Hounds took down the second-seed Lewis 72-63 in the GLVC semifinal on Saturday night, avenging last year's loss in the same round.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hounds held a 14-6 lead at the 12:25 mark but the Flyers went on a dominant 15-0 run, holding UIndy scoreless for over eight minutes of play. Cory Miller Jr. ended the drought with a driving lay up, drawing a foul and sinking the free throw for a three-point play with just over three minutes remaining. Miller Jr. went on to beat the buzzer with another lay up to knot the score at 25 entering halftime.
UIndy opened the second half with a 13-3 run to take the first double digit lead of the game and held a steady lead throughout the second half.
With momentum shifting in Lewis' favor, Ben Nicoson knocked back a clutch three to put UIndy ahead by 11. But the Flyers responded with a quick 8-0 run to make it a three-point game with 2:30 remaining.Â
An untimely Lewis technical foul sent Jesse Bingham to the charity stripe with four shots. Bingham made all four to put UIndy ahead by seven. The Hounds outscored the Flyers 11-5 in the closing minutes to hold on for the win.
