ST. LOUIS, MO – The No. 8 University of Indianapolis men's lacrosse team picked up their fifth straight win on Saturday, edging Maryville 14-10 in their final Great Lakes Valley Conference game of the regular season.
The Hounds finish the season at 5-1 in GLVC play, marking the second-best conference record in program history only behind a perfect record of 6-0 in 2019. With one week remaining in conference play, UIndy has locked in at least the No. 2 seed in the GLVC Championship tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Saints found the net first but Ben Foster evened the game less than 30 seconds later, sparking a 5-0 run for the Hounds. Wyatt Auyer, Patrick O'Hara and Owain Braddock each scored in a three minute span to give UIndy a 4-1 lead after one. Drew Billig capped off the run with a man up goal on the assist from Parker Johnson.
Both teams scored three goals in the second frame, allowing the Hounds to take a 7-4 lead to the break.
The first two goals of the second half belonged to Maryville, making it a one-goal game with just under 20 minutes remaining. Billig connected with Auyer to halt the Saint's momentum and make it 8-6. Less than 90 seconds later, Parker Johnson found the net to extend the lead to three.
The Hounds maintained their lead throughout the fourth quarter as the two teams traded goals. Auyer netted the eventual game winner with 10:47 remaining while Billig and Patrick O'Hara netted insurance goals in the final minute.
Auyer finished with five points off of four goals and one assist. Billig netted three goals and added one assist while Johnson tallied one goal and a pair of assists. Braddock and O'Hara each scored a pair of goals.
Kyle Basch paced the defense with three caused turnovers and seven groundballs. The Hounds defense caused nine turnovers on the day while holding Maryville to 1-for-4 on extra man opportunities.
