Softball Splits at Lindenwood

INDIANAPOLIS—Two of the top teams and top pitching staffs in the GLVC went head-to-head Saturday, with the No. 2 UIndy Greyhounds trading wins with Lindenwood. The host Lions escaped game one with a 4-3 win before the Greyhounds powered their way to a 9-0 victory in the capper.

GAME 1 | Lindenwood 4, UIndy 3
The Lions jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one inning, pushing across four unearned runs in their first at bat. Two fielding errors and a bases-loaded double conspired against the Hounds, putting them in an early hole.

The Greyhounds halved the lead in the third on a costly Lindenwood error, as a ground ball to third led directly to a pair of UIndy runs.

Jocelyn Calvin's RBI double in the sixth cut the margin to one, and later the Hounds would have the tying run at second in the seventh before falling by the slimmest of margins.

Sophomore ace Kenzee Smith took the loss in the circle, moving to 22-5 on the year. After the chaotic first inning, the hometown product tossed six scoreless frames, surrendering four hits and striking out three on the day.

Gianni Iannantone had the Hounds' only two-hit game, while she, Dominique Proctor and Sydnie Foster accounted for one run apiece.

GAME 2 | UIndy 9, Lindenwood 0
Behind a masterful pitching performance from Haylie Foster and some extra-base pop at the plate, the Greyhounds bounced back with a 9-0 win in game two.

Lexy Rees set the tone with a two-run homer in the second, and there the score would stay until the sixth when Rees added a solo home run to make it a three-run game.

UIndy broke it open in the seventh, hanging six runs on the board to pull away. The Greyhounds started the rally with three straight singles and an RBI double by Tara Williams. Sydnee Perry finished it with her first career grand slam.

Foster (21-2) capped her outing by striking out the side in the bottom of the seventh. She finished with a career-high 11 Ks on the way to a one-hit shutout.

Conversely, the Hounds racked up 14 hits, including two from Megan Nichols and a pinch-hit single from Lucy Garrett.

UP NEXT
Just one doubleheader remains on both the GLVC and regular season schedule, as the Greyhounds head across town to Maryville University to take on the Saints Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
