ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The University of Indianapolis women's tennis team swept the Drury Panthers in a 4-0 match, advancing to the Great Lakes Valley Championship – looking to repeat as the tournament champions.
Drury didn't give it to the Greyhounds easy, with three tight singles matches and two doubles matches that were within two.
In doubles, it was GLVC Player of the Year
Anna Novikova and Maria Solnyskina who took the first win with a 6-1 win. In both the two and three duo spots were wins taken in 6-4 matches, with the No. 2 doubles,
Arina Amaning and
Maissane Aik finishing second and
Isabella Dunlap and
Sofia Sharonova winning the final doubles match.
All eyes were on the No. 1's in singles, with the GLVC Player of the Year, Novikova, to face off against GLVC Freshman of the Year, Ewa Samberger. The close match drew attention but ultimately went unfinished, as it was the depth in the Hounds singles roster who would close out the sweep.
Maissane Aik took two quick sets with agility and quick returns in a 6-1 and 6-2 win, while then
Arina Amaning showed her strength on the court with a pair of 6-3 sets. It was
Kristina Lagoda who would secure the sweep for the Hounds with a pair of 6-4 wins, the senior leader did what she did best and finished the match strong for the Hounds.
VS. Rockhurst
Indianapolis women's tennis team took four straight points away from the Rockhurst Hawks in securing it's ticket to the Great Lakes Valley Conference semifinals on Friday afternoon at the Vetta West Tennis Center in St. Louis, Mo.
The Hounds kicked off by taking a perfect sweep in doubles with
Anna Novikova and Marina Solnyshkina taking a 6-0 win in the No. 1 spot, followed by the two and three's taking 6-2 wins. With
Arina Amaning and
Maissane Aik taking the No. 2 win and the No. 3 being
Isabella Dunlap and
Sofia Sharonova.
In singles,
Lea Cakarevic was the first to take a win by not allowing a single point in taking two 6-0 sets in winning er match. Amaning took a 6-2, 6-0 win in the five spot. GLVC Player of the Year,
Anna Novikova would close it off for the Hounds in the win, with a 6-2 and 6-0 win.
