ST. CHARLES, Mo. – With both teams facing elimination from the 2022 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Championship Tournament, the top-seeded Drury University Panthers outlasted the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds in a tournament rematch game by a final score of 9-7. With the loss, UIndy caps off its season with a final overall record of 21-31.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
UIndy gained the upper hand first in the opening frame by crossing a run on an error by the Panthers. Drury answered the call with its own run on an RBI single in the bottom half to tie things back up.
Â
The Hounds delivered a two run third to race back out in front, led by a
Caleb Vaughn RBI single through the left side and a
Denton Shepler RBI double down the right field line. Not to be denied, the Panthers brought around a trio of runners in the bottom half to give the team the lead.
Â
From the fourth inning on, Drury clawed out in front and hardly skipped a beat afterwards. The Panthers crossed a total of five runs through four innings which played a key role in the victory. The Hounds, who scored one in the seventh on a Shepler sacrifice fly, made one final push in the final inning when
Drew Donaldson and
Bo Minor each corralled a pair of RBI doubles to cut the deficit down to two. However, UIndy stranded the tying runners on second and third to end the ballgame.
