DENTON, Texas—The UIndy women's team continued its challenging start to the 2022-23 season, taking on some of the best programs in the country at the DBU Women's Classic Monday and Tuesday. Led by all-tournament performer
Elyse Stasil, the Greyhounds placed fifth in what was essentially a national-championship-caliber field.
Fifteen of the 16 teams in attendance were ranked in the top 50, including four in the top 10 and eight in the top 15. The Hounds combined for a one-under 287 in the final round to hold off No. 4 Anderson (S.C.) and remain in the top five.
"Getting a top five here wasn't easy," admitted head coach
Brent Nicoson. "The field was loaded with highly-ranked teams, and I feel as though we showed glimpses of what we can be later in the year.
Stasil, a fifth-year senior, proved she belongs among DII's best. The Chesteron, Ind., native fired scores of 72-70-68 to finish T-4 at -6.
Senior
Catharina Graf also had a remarkable week, as she shared ninth place. Her tournament including a first-round 69, good for a new collegiate low.
"I am very proud of Elyse and Cathi this week," said Nicoson. "They played very well and proved what experience can do for players. Elyse's round today (68) could have been even lower as her ball striking was very, very solid."
Sophomore
Anci Dy carded her best score of the week in Tuesday's final round, shooting even par to move to T-31.
Katelyn Skinner (+14) and
Maggie Schaffer (+19) also contributed to the team score. Meanwhile, freshman
Ava Ray made the trip as an individual, finishing at +9 to share 51st.
The tournament was held at Robson Ranch Wildhorse Golf Club and was hosted by Dallas Baptist University, the No. 1-ranked team in Division II.
