OWENSBORO, Ky. – The No. 5 UIndy men's basketball team earned its first win of the 2023-24 season on Saturday, defeating in-region Kentucky Wesleyan on its home floor by a score of 64-60.
Â
It was the first matchup between the programs since December 2010 when UIndy pulled out a 92-82 victory in Owensboro in an early-season GLVC contest.
Â
Kendrick Tchoua dominated inside, finishing with 19 points, nine rebounds, four steals, and two blocks. Meanwhile,
David Ejah recorded eight points and a career-best 10 rebounds in the victory.
Â
INS & OUTS
After a fiery first half on the offensive end, the Greyhounds got back to what they do best to secure the four-point victory and that is play tough defense. UIndy limited KWC to just 26.7 percent shooting in the final 20 minutes, including a 22.2 percent clip from deep.
Â
Tchoua played a large part on the defensive side, grabbing eight of his nine boards in the second half.
Â
It was
Jesse Bingham who iced the game, sinking a pair of free throws with 1.8 ticks remaining to put the Greyhounds up four for good. The senior finished with 12 points, three of which came in the waning minutes from the charity stripe.
Â
Jarvis Walker was the offensive sparkplug against the Panthers, feeding off last night's energy he provided off the bench. The junior scored six quick points in the opening minutes and eventually finished 13 in the scoring column.
Â
INSIDE THE BOX
- Fourteen of the team's 42 rebounds came on the offensive glass.
- Tchoua was nine for 11 from the field in 29+ minutes of action.
-
Julian Steinfeld provided big minutes in Tchoua's absence, adding five points to his rebounds in nearly 11 minutes.
- Point guard
Josiah Tynes, as usual, executed the small details, finishing with four assists and three steals.
