Cardinals Push Past Hounds in Home Opener

INDIANAPOLIS – Jesse Bingham had a 3-point look at the buzzer, ultimately circling around the rim as time expired that capped Saginaw Valley State's upset over the No. 5 UIndy men's basketball team on Thursday night.

The 70-67 decision marks the first home-opening loss for the Greyhounds since the 2020-21 season.

Jesse Bingham led the scoring with 22 points, with Kendrick Tchoua (13) and Jarvis Walker (12) also finishing in double figures.

INS & OUTS
Trailing 41-37 at the break, Saginaw Valley sprinted out of the locker room to the tune of a 12-0 run. The Cardinals led for 17 minutes in the second half, leading by three with just under three minutes remaining. Tchoua answered with an offensive rebound, completing the and-1 with a sunk free throw.

After SVSU regained the lead on the next possession, Josiah Tynes responded with his own and-1 opportunity, driving through the lane and fighting through the contact.

The visiting Cardinals continued to pester the Greyhounds, using a 6-2 run in the waning minutes to build that all-important 70-67 advantage. Bingham gave himself a great look right in front of the UIndy bench after stealing an SVSU pass, however, the ball rimmed out as time expired.

INSIDE THE BOX
- Bingham's 22 points is a season-best for the senior and has now scored in double figures in each of the first three games.
- UIndy won the rebounding battle, 38-30, including a 14-8 advantage on the offensive glass.
- Tchoua was instrumental on the boards, securing five of his nine off Greyhound misses.
- Julian Steinfeld recorded four rebounds and two blocks in 14+ minutes of action.
- It was another strong defensive effort for Bingham, adding six boards, four steals, and three blocks to his final line.
