Two Greyhounds Place at Findlay Open

FINDLAY, Ohio – The University of Indianapolis wrestling team battled the Findlay open on Saturday afternoon, with most of their starting lineup sitting out in preparations for the Purdue Duals, set to take place on Sunday.

Ray Rioux and Trey Sizemore were the two UIndy wrestlers to finish within the top seven of their weight class, Rioux taking home second and Sizemore fifth. On the day, UIndy ended with an overall record of 38-32 record across 18 wrestlers.

INS AND OUTS
The No. 11-ranked Rioux's day started out hot in the 141 bracket, where he picked up a pair of falls, the first in 2:46 and the second in 1:08 to send him to the quarterfinals. He followed that with a pair of back-to-back decisions, the first coming over No. 6-ranked Corey Gamet of Lake Erie and then a 4-3 win over Troy Dolphin of Wisconsin-Parkside to find him in the finals. The finals kept the stacked 141 field going, with it being No. 8-ranked Cayden Henschel of Parkside across from Rioux who would battle, but was eventually beaten 13-3 to finish second.

Sizemore, battling through the 174 bracket, fell victim to an early loss, also to a Wisconsin-Parkside Ranger, via a 7-1 decision, sending him to the consolation bracket early. But, in that bracket Sizemore thrived, picking up two pins and two decisions on his way to the fifth-place bout where he earned his placing with a 10-3 victory.

MORE NOTES
Jake Lone, while battling through the 197-consolation bracket, found victory versus Cole Robertson of Division I Ohio State. Hunter Cottingham, after falling in a tight 12-9 match in his first bout of the day, fought on to wrestling three more times, picking up a pin along the way. Shane Bates as well had a long tournament, rebounding from a loss to Gary Nilson of Findlay in his second match to pick up a pin and a tech fall in his consolation matches to end his day 3-2.

HOUND BYTES
Head coach Jason Warthan on Rioux's performance…
"Ray wrestled really well today. He had a couple nice wins, including taking down #6 Corey Gamet of Lake Erie. His bracket was loaded with 4 ranked wrestlers in the top 12."

Warthan on Sizemore's day…

"Trey dropped his first match of the day and then won 5 straight at 174. I was impressed with his ability to bounce back."
