Late Match Heroics Lift #8 Women’s Tennis Over #15 Washburn

ST. LOUIS, Mo – Facing the No. 15-ranked Washburn Ichabods, the No. 8 UIndy women's tennis team claimed its first win over ranked opposition of the season. The win moves the Greyhounds to 4-0 on the season in preparation for their first GLVC opponent on Saturday.

INS & OUTS
Despite a loss at No. 1 doubles, the Greyhounds claimed the doubles point behind scrappy victories by Diane Flament and Maissane Aik at No. 2 doubles and by Margarita Andreiuk and Maria Fiacan at No. 3 doubles.

The top of the lineup was the strength for the Ichabods, claiming victories at No. 1 and No. 2 singles quickly, taking the lead back 2-1. It was gutsy play from the Greyhounds that would outlast Washburn. Fiacan at No. 5 singles survived a 6-3 first set loss to go on and win back to back 6-1 sets to bring the score even. Just shortly later, Andreiuk delivered yet another three-set victory for the Hounds. After a first set where she led from the first game, she dropped set two by a late comeback. Not content with being beat after being up one, she took a 2-1 lead in set three and never looked back, winning 6-4.

No. 17 Lea Cakarevic was yet another three-set victory for the Greyhounds, also securing the match win for the Hounds. Her first two sets were back and forth affairs, but set three was a comeback victory for Cakarevic, having not held the lead until it was 5-4. Diane Flament extended the win even further for the Hounds, winning 6-4, 6-2 at the No. 6 spot.

UP NEXT
The No. 8-ranked Greyhounds will stay in St. Louis for another night, battling the Southwest Baptist Bearcats at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
