INDIANPOLIS – University of Indianapolis redshirt-sophomore
Derek Blubaugh has been named GLVC Wrestler of the Year, marking the second time in program history* that the Hounds have garnered the top prize in the conference. Blubaugh, who currently sits at No. 1 for 197lbs, spent his season as the guiding force in the back-end of the Hounds lineup, going 28-1 in the regular season, with 11 falls on the year.
Blubaugh's biggest win of the year coming at NWCA Nationals where he shattered reigning DII National Champion and then No. 1 Dalton Abney's 39-match winning streak. That win vaulted him into the No. 1 spot, becoming the fifth Greyhound to earn the No. 1 spot in the rankings.
Additionally, the league recognized seven GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award Individual nominees – one from each team – with Blubaugh garnering the honor for UIndy. The student-athletes chosen include individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. Blubaugh and the other honorees are now eligible to become one of their school's two overall Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners at the end of the 2022-23 academic year.
"Blubaugh has had an outstanding season, and it's not surprising the success he's had, because I see him everyday and I know that he is always trying to better himself, Head Coach
Jason Warthan said. "He is contstantly trying to put the work in, being a good student, person and obviously wrestler. I'm not suprised, well deserved award."
Alongside Blubaugh,
Jason Warthan was named GLVC Coach of the Year, leading UIndy to 13-3 overall record and 6-1 GLVC record, as well as earning the program's first-ever GLVC Championship, while being in the top ten in the NWCA rankings for majority of the season.
"It's an individual award I suppose, but you can give the credit to a lot of different people. I have an amazing group around me, assistant coaches, I'm fortunate to have people that volunteer their time and put a lot of effort into making this squad better, Warthan said. "My names on the award, but its a team and program award for sure."
Aside from the two major award winners, the Greyhounds were recognized heavily in the All-GLVC honorees, with the aforementioned Blubaugh,
Breyden Bailey (133) and
Jack Eiteljorge (165) all being unanimous selections for first team.
Logan Bailey rounded out the Hounds in the first team. On second team
Jackson Hoover at 149 was the only honoree.
Despite the one honoree at second team, the Hounds peppered the third team, with freshman
Aidan Sprague (125),
Ray Rioux (141),
Owen Butler (174) and
Cale Gray (285).
"This was a difficult year as well, with the scheduling and the quick turnaround on some of these duals," Warthan said. "When we were picked in the preseason to be the favorite, people circled that dual and Maryville and McKendree were amped up for those duals. So this one means a little bit more, we had to overcome adversity, having only one home event for a GLVC schedule is not ideal and for us to come out on top speaks volumes, not only for the ten guys that we have representing the squad going into regionals, but also we had several guys step up in dual situations. This wasn't just ten guys, this was a reflection of the whole team winnning this championship.
*Dylan Faulkenberg (285) first honoree in 2019.
