Singles Play Propels Greyhounds to Win Over Bulldogs

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The No. 8-ranked UIndy women's tennis team made a showing out of a match-up with Ferris State, concluding their two match Michigan tour with a pair of wins. The match, for the sake of brevity, was played to clinch with the Greyhounds reaching a 4-1 victory on the backs of stellar singles play.

INS AND OUTS
The Bulldogs stuck true to their mascot name and came out aggressive, taking the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3. The Hounds, with their backs to the wall, showed up big in singles play however. Maria Fiacan in No. 4 singles got the party started first, grabbing a first set win 6-3, and putting on the clamps in set two, evening the match score one apiece. Maissane Aik was poised in the No. 2 singles slot, fighting off a first set battle to win 6-4, putting the Hounds up by one.

Margarita Andreiuk, who has already had a great start to her freshman season, kept that rolling with an assertive first set. That led exceptionally well into the second where she cruised to a 6-4 win. The win by Andreiuk put the match in the hands of the ever-dangerous Anna Novikova.

Despite her reputation, Novi dropped the first set, lining up a three-set thriller. Back-to-back 6-2 sets in the second and third sets was all she needed to send the Greyhounds home to the Circle City with a pair of Michigan dubs to their name.

UP NEXT
The Greyhounds are on the road once again, travelling to St. Louis for a battle with Washburn on Friday, Feb. 10 at 2:30 p.m. and then the next day against SBU at 6 p.m.
