CLERMONT, Fla.—The No. 8-ranked UIndy softball team opened its annual Spring Break trip to Florida by splitting a pair of decisions Saturday . The Greyhounds came up short in a 2-1 final versus Molloy before routing Minnesota Crookston, 12-1.
Â
GAME 1 | Molloy 2, UIndy 1
The Lions managed a two-run double in the bottom of the first, and that marked to whole of the game's scoring going into the seventh inning.
Â
Jocelyn Calvin led off the final frame with a clutch single, and
Maddy Stout followed with a base hit to put two on for
Megan Nichols. The sophomore outfielder delivered a clutch one-out single to plate Clavin and bring the tying run to third. But Molloy escaped with any further damaging by retiring the next two UIndy batters to earn the win.
Â
After enduring the Lions' first-inning rally, starter
Kenzee Smith tossed five innings of no-hit softball, striking out two on the day and walking zero.
Â
The UIndy batters out-hit Molloy 7-3 on the day, including two apiece by Stout and Nichols. Stout and
Lexy Rees each had a double as the only extra-base hits for the Hounds.
Â
GAME 2 | UIndy 12, Minnesota Crookston 1
The Hounds bounced back and then some, run-ruling the Golden Eagles in five inning. UIndy dropped an eight-spot in the bottom of the first before cruising to the win.
Â
Senior
Kaitlyn Brown tossed another gem to move to 4-0 in four starts. She gave up one unearned run in 4 1/3 scoreless innings and has yet to allow an earned run this season. Freshman
Alexa Huth came on to get the final two outs.
Â
Rees' bases-loaded double marked the biggest blow offensively. Dominque Proctor finished 3-for-3 with four RBIs and
Shelby Cook scored three times.
