Bats Go Quiet As Greyhounds Drop Two More Against Maryville

INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 21-ranked UIndy baseball team fell in the final two games of their conference opening series against the Maryville Saints by scores of 12-1 and 13-3. The Hounds now sit at 11-4 with a 0-4 conference mark.

GAME 1: MARYVILLE 12, UINDY 1
The first game of the doubleheader got off to a hot start with the Saints putting up a run in the first off of Logan Peterson. The Hounds answered right back in the bottom of the first with Caleb Vaughn punching a single to third base which scored Drew Donaldson.

But after that, the Greyhound bats went dead silent recording zero hits in the remaining six innings. The Saints bats stayed hot, putting up four runs in the second and the sixth and then a final three in the top of the seventh.

GAME 2: MARYVILLE 13, UINDY 3
With a thirty-minute break in between games, the Hounds looked to regroup and prevent the four-game sweep. However, the Saints bats stayed on fire, lighting up game two starter Frankie Klemm for a four spot in the games opening frame, with Klemm only recording one out in the process.

The Hounds looked to counter with an offensive explosion of their own but singles by Brandon DeWitt and Donaldson were wasted as the Hounds left the bottom of the second with no runs. The Saints added another run in the third before the Hounds finally answered, scoring two in the third off of a Denton Shepler single and Brayton Bowen rocket down the first base line.

Those two runs ended up being overshadowed as the Saints sent a ball over the right field fence making it 8-2 in the fifth. Two more homers in the sixth made it 12-2. Caleb Vaughn tried to inject some energy into the Hounds, hammering a dinger over the left field wall but it was too little too late. The Saints added a final 13th run in the top of the eighth to induce the mercy rule, ending the contest in eight innings.
