Men's Hoops Picks Up Win in Tynes' Halifax Homecoming

HALIFAX, N.S. – The UIndy men's basketball team returned to action a bit earlier this season, tipping off the 2023-24 campaign with 76-69 over Dalhousie University in the team's first game on its NCAA foreign tour in Nova Scotia.

UIndy senior Josiah Tynes played on Canadian soil for the first time in eight years, returning home to Halifax to produce five points, five rebounds, and three assists, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to end the third quarter.

The Greyhounds and host Tigers played one full game under FIBA rules before battling it out for two more 10-minute quarters.

UIndy led by as many as 13 points early in the third quarter, with Jarvis Walker drilling a transition 3-pointer following a pair of slam dunks from Julian Steinfeld. The Tigers managed to fight back, cutting it to one possession late in the final frame, but it was the Greyhound defense that finally stopped the host's assault from behind the arc. Dalhousie opened the game 14 for 22 from 3-point range before missing all seven attempts in the final 10 minutes.

Jesse Bingham led the Hounds with 17 points, while David Ejah secured a game-high 11 rebounds. Newcomer Paul Zilinskas added nine points and five boards.

Nine of the 11 Greyhounds that saw action finished in the scoring column. Sophomore Sean Craig hit a pair of attempts from deep and grabbed five rebounds off the bench.

UIndy dominated inside, recording 42 rebounds and outscoring Dalhousie in the paint, 38-12. Eighteen of the Hounds' boards came on the offensive glass, with Ejah grabbing five.

In the final two quarters following the regulation game, the Greyhounds pulled out another small victory by a score of 42-30. Craig added eight more points, while freshmen Ethan Hinton and Braden McGlothlin combined for 18 points in 27 combined minutes.

The Greyhounds return to action Tuesday evening at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, at 6 p.m. ET.

Now let junior Jarvis Walker describe the first two days of UIndy's visit to Nova Scotia in his own words below:

"Nova Scotia thus far has been great experience from staying in downtown Halifax to Josiah Tynes family hosting us at their house to visiting Peggy's Cove. The people of Nova Scotia are very friendly and have embraced us. They have been welcoming and always speak either to ask if we are basketball team? Or crack a joke about our height as they point out how tall we are. It was nice meeting Josiah's Family and getting a delicious home cooked meal. They were very warming and it was great to see where Josiah comes from. We are staying downtown and there is a beautiful view of the harbor from our rooms. We explored downtown for a bit yesterday and it was awesome. Downtown has an abundance of stores. Going to Peggy's cove was nothing short of amazing. We went on a boat excursion and it was mesmerizing how beautiful the water was. Seeing the different landscapes carved out by the ocean was incredible. We learned the importance of fishing to the community and how for a lot of people it is their source of income. Also, it is how they make a living for some. That was eye opening information to me about the importance of fishing to their culture there. You see stuff like that on TV or hear about people who still live off or depend on the environment to provide but to see it was great and educating. Today has been both enjoyable and educational and filled with endless laughs, jokes, and smiles."
