INDIANAPOLIS - The UIndy men's soccer team fell 2-1 to Lewis in tonight's GLVC semifinal match, marking a repeat result of these two teams' match on Nov. 1 when Lewis took down UIndy 2-1 at Key Stadium.
The Flyers and Greyhounds are familiar foes with each other, facing off for the seventh time in the last three seasons, with Lewis holding a five to two win advantage over the Hounds. This also marks the 18th time out of the last 20 matches between these two, in which the game was decided by one goal or less.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lewis started this game on the front foot, creating four chances, and were eventually rewarded with the game's first goal of the match in the 22nd minute on a low driven shot from Godwin Asore to beat Ionas Giovandis and give the Flyers a 1-0 lead.
The Flyers continued their dominant offensive production, by forcing two saves from Giovanidis in the 33rd and 35th minutes which kept the score 1-0 Lewis.
But the Hounds would not be denied, Jona Hogle earned a penalty kick for the Hounds in the 37th minute after he was taken down on a break away by the Flyer's Sebastian Doppelhoffer.
Jakob David converted the penalty to level the match at 1-1 and keep the teams tied as they headed to halftime.
The second half began as a stalemate for both teams, but that was ended when Lewis' Mikey Revell's corner kick found Artus Gorodnickis' head on the back post to give the Flyers the 2-1 lead after 61 minutes.
Giovanidis came up with another big save in the match to keep the score 2-1, when Gorodnickis' curling shot from the outside of the 18-yard box forced a diving two-handed save.
UIndy's lone second half chance came from Demetris Giannakopoulos, whose shot went just high and wide right of the goal in the 77th minute.
The Flyers were able to salt away the remaining 13 minutes, and come out on top 2-1, marking an end to the Hounds GLVC title defense.
