INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis men's tennis team is not only competing in the prestigious ITA DII National Men's Team Indoor Championship, but they are also playing the host school for now the third season in a row. Eight of the best teams from all across the country are set to come to Indianapolis and will battle it out for championship glory starting this Friday.
The No. 7-ranked Greyhounds will enter the bracket as the No. 5-seed, kicking off their tournament run against the four-seed in No. 6 Columbus State. The Hounds and Cougars have plenty of history, with the most recent coming in the semifinals of the NCAA tournament, where the Greyhounds saw their season end at the hands of the Panthers in Orlando, Fla.
The other match up the tournament holds on the left side is the reigning NCAA National Champions Barry Buccaneers, who enter as the No. 1 seed, and the eight-seeded Wayne State Warriors. The opposite side of the draw sees No. 1 Valdosta State and No. Flagler battle it out, while last year's ITA DII Indoor Champs Saint Leo will battle the No. 5 ranked West Florida Argos.
The Greyhounds, much like last year's ITA Indoors, are riding a hot streak to enter competition this year, starting 4-0, having downed back-to-back-to-back ranked squads, most recently beating fellow tournament team
Wayne State by a score of 4-1 in the UIndy Tennis Center.
Individually, the Hounds have had a stout lineup headed up by
Tom Zeuch out of the No. 1 singles slot who comes into the year with a 12-1 record, his only loss being in the finals of the ITA Cup in the fall. Thus far in team play, the No. 2-ranked graduate student has been lights out, going 4-0, having only dropped one set thus far in 2024.
Zeuch's success doesn't hold just to singles, as in doubles he's found a new spark alongside
Matthieu Derache, with the pair making it back-to-back wins against top-5 ranked teams. Zeuch and Derache beat the No. 1 pairing and reigning ITA Cup Champs, Tim Hammes and Santiago Rendon from Washburn on Feb. 9, following that up with a 6-3 masterclass victory against Daniel Grey and Cedric Drenth of Wayne State.
The success has not come only to Zeuch and Derache, as newcomer
David Simeonov from Dryanovo, Bulgaria, has slid in nicely at No. 2 for the Hounds, going 3-1 to start the year. Rounding out the lineup the Hounds have seen quality tennis from
Louis Picaud,
Erwan Momo Andre, the aforementioned Derache and even bottom of the lineup play from
Mauricio Grijalva.
