EVANSVILLE, Ind.—The No. 9 UIndy softball team wrapped up its two-day stay in Evansville, Ind., Saturday, splitting its final two games at the Blue Bridge Battle. The Greyhounds blanked in-region Trevecca Nazarene, 5-0, before falling to Ohio Dominican, 8-3.
GAME 1 | UIndy 5, TNU 0
Ace
Kenzee Smith delivered another gem of a performance, shutting down a normally-potent Trojans offense for all seven innings. Trevecca averaged nearly six runs per game heading into the day, but Smith surrendered just two hits and two walks while striking out seven to up her record to 4-0 on the season.
Smith has allowed just one earned run in seven appearances this spring, good for a miniscule 0.24 ERA.
The UIndy bats generated four runs in the third inning—more than enough support for Smith.
Lexy Rees (single) and
Braxton Downs (double) each had two ribbies in the rally.
Sydnee Perry (HBP),
Jocelyn Calvin (walk) and
Megan Nichols (bunt single) also reached base safely in the frame.
The Hounds' final run came on an RBI triple by Downs in the fifth.
GAME 2 | ODU 8, UIndy 3
The Panthers jumped out to an early lead, scoring a combined six runs in the first two innings.
UIndy chipped away with runs in both the fourth and fifth. Doubles from Downs and
Shelby Cook got the Hounds on the board in the fourth, while two walks and a double steal helped push across a pair of unearned runs in the fifth.
Cara Cooper and Nichols scored in the latter frame to trim the lead to three, but ODU tacked on a couple more tallies in the sixth to pull away.
Starter
Kaitlyn Brown (1-1) took the loss in the circle after lasting just one-plus innings.
Jayden Casebolt came on and went 4 2/3, while freshman
Katie Rose finished the game with a scoreless 1 1/3 frames.
