Hounds Struggle in Tuesday Bouts with Pride

HAMMOND, Ind. – Playing on short rest, the University of Indianapolis baseball team took a trip northwest to Hammond, Ind. to battle the Purdue Northwest Pride in a bout of the last remaining NCAA Division II schools in the Hoosier State. Despite the Hounds coming in hot after taking an important series in Springfield, it did not transfer as the Pride swept the doubleheader.

The bats were quiet, with the Hounds accumulating just seven hits in game one and three in game two. Despite that, Drew Donaldson was back to his old ways, leading the Hounds with a 3-for-6 performance on the day which included two doubles and two RBIs. Cole Hampton launched yet another blast as well in game one of the day, making it his fourth of the season.

GAME 1 | PNW 7, UIndy 6
It looked to be a long day for the Pride early in Hammond as Donaldson, after Easton Good was gifted third base through an error and passed ball by the Pride, ripped a ball into right to nab the Hounds their first run of the day. Zack Williams added to that total with a groundout later that frame.

The Hounds and Pride traded runs in the second with Luis Vergara grabbing an RBI. The Hounds could not pull away as the Pride mounted a big four-run fifth to take the lead for the first time in the contest. That lead held as despite the efforts of Donaldson in the sixth, the Hounds couldn't muster anymore offense.

GAME 2 | PNW 4, UIndy 0
Caden Wilburn manned the bump for the Hounds in the second game of the set and it was a struggle early as with just one out he issued a free pass that gifted the home team their first run. The Hounds pitchers' control continued to falter in the second as well, giving the Pride two more runs via the base on balls.

Bennett Rogers, making his fourth appearance of the season, forced a popup to end the second and the continued to work strong from there giving the Hounds 2 & 1/3 innings of valuable work with a depleted bullpen. He ended his day only giving up one hit and an earned up. Jacob Flaherty, the Findlay transfer, was called on next out of the bullpen as the Hounds continued to face zeros in the runs column. In his fifth game of action and second against the Pride, he looked solid with two innings of one hit ball.

Despite the small hits number, the Hounds did not struggle to get runners on base, working eight walks in the second game.

UP NEXT
The Hounds will look to forget their trip to Hammond, Ind. as they welcome in the Quincy Hawks to – potentially –
Greyhound Park for their next GLVC-baseball series. They are set to begin on Friday at 3 p.m., however, rough weather in the forecast may force a shift in the Hounds current schedule. Stay tuned to @UIndyBaseball on X for more information.
