O'Connor Makes Program History in Softball's Win Over Maryville

INDIANAPOLIS - The No. 5 UIndy softball team swept Maryville in a close battle on Sunday. The Greyhounds increased their win streak to nine as they enter the final two weeks of the regular season.

The highlight of the day included Emily O'Connor adding her name to the UIndy record books for the most home runs in a career. O'Connor hit her 46th bomb of her career passing Taylor Russell. From 2012-15, Russell hit 45 dingers in a UIndy uniform.

GAME 1 | UIndy 2, Maryville 1 (9 innings)
Game one was a battle between pitchers as the low-scoring contest went into extras. Greyhound ace Kenzee Smith faced the Saints' Chayse Ramey. Both student-athletes remained inside the circle all nine frames, with Smith coming out on top. The senior struck out seven batters and only allowed one walk.

The game headed into extras tied at 1-1. In the bottom of the ninth, UIndy put immediate pressure on the Maryville defense, loading the bases with no one out. Senior Grace Mosele coaxed a walk to win the game for the hounds.

Jocelyn Calvin earned an RBI with a double in the third. Megan Nichols, Braxton Downs, and Sydnee Perry made their efforts known with one sacrifice hit apiece.

This game was the first time since the 2023 season that the Greyhounds played into extra innings. The last instance was in the 2023 NCAA DII Midwest Regional on May 12, against Lewis. That contest lasted 11 innings.

GAME 2 | UIndy 8, Maryville 5
UIndy started the contest with a four-run rally in the bottom of the starting frame. The first run came on to O'Connor's historic home run. She deposited a 3-0 pitch well over the center field dense to climb to the top of one of the most prestigious lists in the UIndy annals.

After two Greyhound walks, Shelby Cook hit a bomb of her own ending the rally for the Hounds. Braxton Downs was the third Greyhound of the day who sent the ball flying over the fence, hitting a solo homer in the fifth. Tori Angles and Cook also finished with a stolen base each.

Jayden Casebolt was the starting pitcher for UIndy in game two. The junior who is now 14-1 on the season remained at the helm of the defense for the entirety of the game. Casebolt allowed one walk while striking out two.

UP NEXT
UIndy will travel to Cedarville, Ohio to take on in-region foe Cedarville on Tuesday, April 16. The two programs faced each other earlier in the season at the Music City Invitational on Feb. 17. The Greyhounds defeated the Yellow Jackets, 7-5. The first pitch of the doubleheader is set for 3:30 p.m.
