White Claims Two Saves as Hounds Take Series with Saints

INDIANAPOLIS – The University of Indianapolis baseball team has secured the series victory against the No. 25-ranked Maryville Saints, marking the first series loss in GLVC baseball action this year for the visitors.

E.J. White had a day for the history books. Already earning the win in game one of the series, White captured the save in both contests, pitching a combined 1 & 2/3 innings on the day. For his efforts, White earned save nine and 10 of the season, moving him tied for fourth in program history for single-season saves.

With the bat, it was success by committee, with four Greyhounds having three hits, those including Easton Good, Caleb Vaughn, Will Spear and Dakota Sill. Good and Donaldson led the way with three RBIs to their names.

GAME 1 | UIndy 9, Maryville 7
The Saints jumped all over Greyhound Starter Carter Nowak early, scratching across four in the first two frames. But as everyone should know, the Hounds never go away quietly. A throwing error by the pitcher, a sacrifice bunt by Spear and a Good RBI single brought the Hounds within one.

The Saints and Hounds traded runs in the third and fourth leaving it 5-4 in fourth when the Hounds came to bat. Well that was the big one as they plated five runs, the biggest blow coming via a Vaughn bases loaded knock.

The Saints attempted a comeback in the seventh, but the fire stopper in White was there to end the hopes of that.

GAME 2 | UIndy 7, Maryville 6
The nail-biters continued to come for both teams as the Saints and Hounds battled back-and-forth for seven innings. Much like game one, the Saints jumped on the starter, this time in Logan Peterson, knocking him out in fifth inning with a long two-run homer.

Before that, the Hounds had fought tooth and nail to make it a 5-4 Greyhound lead, including clutch single after clutch single. Those clutch moments did not rest after the pitching change as Payton Plym gave the Hounds a chance to win.

A Nick Lukac sac bunt tied it in the fifth and after a Bryce Goodwine lead-off double, it was up to Good to give the Hounds the lead and he did just that.

Defense wins championships and almost certainly wins games as the Hounds used that to their advantage in the seventh. After a leadoff walk by White, Spear eliminated the threat, throwing behind the runner in an unbelievably clutch pickoff. That set up White to close the game and the door on the Saints.

UP NEXT
The Hounds will hunt the sweep tomorrow at Greyhound Park as they face the Saints in the finale of the four game set. The final nine-inning game will start at noon.
