Softball Defeats Lewis for First Place in GLVC

INDIANAPOLIS - The No. 5 UIndy softball team swept visiting Lewis University in two nail-biting games on Saturday afternoon. With both entering the day 11-1 in the GLVC, the doubleheader sweep gave the Greyhounds sole possession of first place in the conference standings.

GAME 1 | UIndy 2, Lewis 0
It was pitcher against pitcher during the opening contest. Lewis's Allie Wonrasek was undefeated heading into Saturday, but she was bested by Greyhound ace Kenzee Smith. Smith pitched her 15th complete game this season and is now 19-1. Facing 27 batters, the All-American only allowed three hits and one walk during the contest.

Braxton Downs was the hero for the UIndy offense. With the bases loaded in the fifth inning, Downs hit the ball into left field. Megan Nichols and Jocelyn Calvin took advantage of the hit and made their way to home plate from second and third, respectively.

All five hits by the Hounds were done by different players. Besides Downs, Lexy Rees, Dominique Proctor, Grace Mosele, and Calvin all had base hits.

Game 2 | UIndy 4, Lewis 3
Game two was another battle pitchers' duel. This time it was the Greyhounds Jayden Casebolt who faced the Flyer's Delaney Garden. Both pitchers struck out seven batters and allowed four hits and one walk. But Casebolt earned the win and improved to 12-1 with some timely help from the Greyhound hitters.

The Hounds entered the bottom of the sixth down 3-1. UIndy was able to pull away with a three-run rally. A Calvin double, a Rees sac fly, and a pair of Lewis fielding errors fueling the fire.

Smith made her second appearance of the day in the final inning. With two down and the tying run at first, the senior stepped into the circle to complete the final out. Smith retired the only batter she faced and earned her third save of the season.

Calvin finished the game with two out of the three Greyhound hits, including the aforementioned sixth-inning double. Nichols also had a sacrifice hit during the contest. In the field, Mosele completed two diving catches that were key in the Hounds' victory.

UP NEXT
The Hounds will continue their homestand at Bumgarner with doubleheaders against Missouri S&T and Maryville. First up will be S&T on Saturday, April 13, with Maryville visiting on Sunday, April 14. Both twin bills will begin at noon.
