Dr. Sue Willey spent 17 years as director of athletics and 45 years overall at the University of Indianapolis as a student-athlete, coach, teacher and administrator.  The 2010 and 2013 Under Armour Division II Athletic Director of the Year and 2005 NACWAA Division II Administrator of the Year guided the Greyhounds to uncharted territory in her time at the helm. Sue established UIndy as one of the top overall athletic programs in both NCAA Division II and the state of Indiana. The Greyhounds became regular qualifiers for NCAA postseason play and have been recognized for academic achievement as well as athletic success.
 
The athletic department's facilities underwent major renovations in Sue's tenure. The biggest upgrade –a new indoor facility – was completed in 2011.  The Athletics & Recreation Center (ARC) provided much-needed space for sports teams.  The 90,000-square-foot facility includes office space, training room, weight room, batting cages and a golf practice area for the athletics program; an indoor competition track; and locker rooms for all the outdoor sports. The project also included the building of the new Baumgartner Field for softball. On September 30, 2022, Sue was honored with the naming of the new Ruth Lilly Fitness Center Floor as the Sue Willey Court.
 
Sue has been active in many professional organizations. She served a four-year (2006-10) term on the NACWAA Executive Board, the NCAA DII Nominating Committee, Membership Committee and completed her final four years of service on the Championships Committee, serving the last two as chair. Sue is a proud graduate of the NACWAA Institute for Athletic Executives, now known as Women Leaders in Sports.
 
From 2002-06, Sue served on the highest NCAA committee available to athletic administrators – the NCAA Division II Management Council – chairing the Council in 2004.  Her Management Council assignments included the Budget and Finance Committee, Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee, Management Council Identity Subcommittee, Championships Regionalization Task Force, Project Team to Review Issues Related to Diversity and the Championships Eligibility Project Team.  
 
A 1993 inductee into the UIndy Athletic Hall of Fame, Sue earned an incredible 19 letters and 11 MVP awards in five sports during her four-year career. She was the "Female Athlete of the Year" from 1972-75.  She began her coaching career at her alma mater after graduating cum laude from UIndy in 1975. Sue showed her versatility at her alma mater as she coached 23 years at UIndy, directing 43 different teams in five sports. 
 
Following Sue's retirement in 2020, recognition for her work continued. She received the DII Conference Commissioners Association Meritorious Service Award and the DII Athletic Directors Association Lifetime Achievement Award. Most recently she was inducted into the Great Lakes Valley Conference Hall of Fame and was recognized with the Gold Award, which was created as part of NCAA Division II's 50th anniversary celebration and honored one female and one male who made a positive impact in Division II.
 
Sue was an associate professor and taught in the Department of Kinesiology for over three decades. She also taught in the sports management master's program. She holds a master's degree and a doctorate from Indiana University.
