Hounds Sweep Sharks in Season-Opening Action

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy swimming & diving teams opened its 2025-26 season Friday night with some top-tier competition. The Greyhounds welcomed fellow-DII-power Nova Southeastern to the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center only to top the visiting Sharks on both the men's and women's sides.

The Nova Southeastern women are the three-time reigning national champions, while the men placed 15th at Nationals last March.

INS & OUTS
The Greyhound women held off the defending champs with a number of strong individual performances. Newcomer Valentina Masella won both backstroke events, while veteran Celina Schmidt swept the breaststroke races. All four times hit the NCAA B standard, while Masella made an early entrance into the UIndy all-time top 10s.

Former DII-record-holder Kirabo Namutebi just missed an A-cut, winning the women's 50 free in 22.69. Caprice Schlutter hit the B standard in her first race as Hound, wining the 100 fly with a time of 55.48.

Both women's relay teams hit provisional times, with the quartet of Caroline Reinke, Megan Gregory, Schlutter and Namutebi winning the 200 medley relay with a mark of 1:41.04.

Junior diver Megan Sunderman won the women's 3-meter (210.98) while freshman Abby Sneed took the 1-meter (196.71).

On the men's side, the Greyhounds dominated their guests, led by senior Jeremias Pock. The reigning 400 IM national champ picked up right were he left off last year, posting early A-cut times in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke.

Newcomer Jan Schmidt, meanwhile, won three individual races, touching first in the 500 free, 100 back and 200 IM. His 500 free race as well as Swann Plaza's 1000 swim yielded B times. Liquor Andoko (100 free) and Elias Noe (100 fly) also hit the B standard, while Nico Basten (200 free) and Terry Lee (200 fly) both picked up wins.

In the relays, the same foursome of Zachary Anthony, Johann-Matthew Matamoro, Pock and Noe won both the 200 MR and 200 FR.

Sophomore Adam Carr swept the diving events with scores of 213.38 (1-meter) and 219.31 (3-meter).
