INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy wrestling team fell in the team's first dual of the 2025-26 season in a closely contested dual against No. 16 ranked Ashland, 21-19.
The Greyhounds and Eagles have not faced off against one another since 2023 when both teams met at the NWCA National Duals.
Today's dual was chalk full of NWCA ranked wrestlers for both sides, with seven of the 10 matches involving at least one ranked wrestler.
"I'm proud of the effort of the guys," head coach Jason Warthan said. "Disappointed with the outcome but that was a good and experienced Ashland team. They had 7 ranked guys in their lineup. We were right there to win the dual."
INS & OUTS
In 125, Jadon Gyan fell in the first duel of the day to the No. 10 ranked wrestler in 125, Luke Acuna after a back-and-forth affair where Acuna used two second period takedowns to pick up the 12-9 decision.
The Hounds then went on a dominant stretch, winning four of the next five match ups, and picking up two ranked victories in those four contests. Aidan Sprague (133) and Bryce Doss (157) both claimed first period pin wins, while Zach Haughton (141), and Logan Farnell (165) both picked the first and second ranked wins on the day.
"We got a couple first period falls from 157 Doss and 133 Sprague that really gave us a chance to win that dual," Warthan said. "It's exciting to see Sprague again, as he's been sidelined since opening week last year."
"Doss got his first win in a UIndy singlet, he's been a spark plug for the team," Warthan said.
"Zach Haughton beat a returning national qualifier in Brock Durbin, that's a big win and well deserved," Warthan said. "He took advantage of the opportunity."
"Logan Farnell picked up a major decision over a former All American and multiple time national qualifier," Warthan said. "He is wrestling well right now and made some adjustments from last week."
Shane Bates (174), newcomer Christian Chavez (184), and Ethan Farnell (197) all stumbled in their matches today, with Bates and Chavez both falling in close decisions, while Farnell lost via major decision to No. 14-ranked Peyton Lemon.
With the Hounds clinging to a one point lead heading into the penultimate match of the day with two top-10 ranked wrestlers in the 285 weight class, the Eagles' Wyatt Bailey was able to come out on top via an 11-6 decision that gave Ashland the three points it needed to claim Saturday's dual.
