KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Coming directly off playing six non-conference games on its annual Spring Break trip to Florida, the 16th-ranked UIndy softball team returned to GLVC play with another lengthy trek this weekend, this time to the Kansas City area. The Greyhounds split a pair of contests at Rockhurst University Saturday afternoon, including a 19-9 comeback win in game two.
GAME 1 | RU 6, UIndy 0
Despite the thunderous ending to the day, the UIndy offense started slowly. The Hounds' first hit didn't come until there were two outs in the fourth. UIndy later loaded the bases in the fifth and also put a runner on in the seventh but couldn't cash in.
Freshman pitcher
Cheyenne Eads took the loss to fall to 6-6 on the year.
Josie Jager came on in relief and pitched the final 3 2/2 innings, allowing just three hits in one unearned run.
GAME 2 | UIndy 19, RU 9
UIndy came out swinging in the capper.
Jocelyn Calvin roped a doubled to start the game, sparking a four-run first inning.
Brooklyn Willis and
Shelby Cook also had two-baggers in the rally, with both driving in two runs.
Four more runs crossed the plate in the third, extending the lead. The Hounds racked up five hits and a walk in the frame, including a two-run double from
Cara Cooper.
The Hawks claws backed, however, eventually taking a one-run lead in the bottom of the fifth. But the lead proved a mere blip, as the Greyhounds lowered the hammer with a seven-run sixth inning before piling on with four more in the seventh.
When the dust settled, UIndy had amassed 23 hits, 18 RBIs and nine walks. Five Rockurst pitchers were left in the wake, each of which allowed at least one run.
All 10 Greyhounds that came to the plate got in the hit column. Cooper,
Brooklyn Willis,
Shelby Cook,
Kaitlyn Flynn and
Sydney Oliver all got on base at least four times via a hit or a walk. Cooper's line finished at 5-for-6 with four ribbies and three runs scored.
In the circle, Jager again effectively relieved the Greyhound starter, this time earned her first collegiate win with 2 1/3 scoreless innings.
Jayden Casebolt got the start and battled through 4 2/3 before giving way to her freshman teammate.
