Grand Slams Fuel High-Scoring Sweep

INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 16 UIndy softball team lit up the scoreboard Sunday afternoon, pummeling Lake Erie College by final scores of 23-0 and 11-5. Both Maya Rodriguez and Jocelyn Calvin notched a grand slam to become the first pair of Greyhound teammates to turn the trick on the same day since grand slam data became available in 2001.

Additionally, game one netted the Hounds' highest run total since 2012 and the largest run differential in the program's Division II era*.

The games were contested at local Beech Grove High School on the southside of Indianapolis.

GAME 1 | UIndy 23, LEC 0 (5 inn.)
Shelby Cook's two-run double in the bottom of the first inning forced the first of three early pitching changes for the Storm. By the time the second inning ended, Lake Erie found themselves in a 12-0 hole. UIndy drew five walks in the first inning alone, while with the bases loaded in the second inning, Rodriguez lifted a pitch over the right field fence for first collegiate home run. She is the just second Greyhound on record to hit a salami for her first career homer.

The fourth inning brought more fireworks for the Greyhound bats. UIndy nearly batted around twice, sending 17 hitters to the plate in a 12-run inning. Brooklyn Willis, Cara Cooper and Kaitlyn Flynn each had two hits in the frame, while Peyton Cusack coaxed a walk in both of her plate appearances.

Cheyenne Eads (3-3) got the win in the circle, spinning her second complete-game shutout of the young season. She allowed just two hits and struck out eight. She also finished 3-for-4 at the plate with four runs scored and three RBIs.

Sydney Oliver walked four times, while Willis finished the game with four hits, four runs and four ribbies.

GAME 2
| UIndy 11, LEC 5
The Storm managed their only offensive outburst of the day with a five-run second inning—good for a 5-2 lead. UIndy answered with two in the bottom of the second and a game-changing six-run surge in the third to pull away.

It was Calvin's bat that made the most noise. After a two-run single in the second inning, the all-region second baseman ripped a shot to dead center that carried over the fence for a two-out granny—the first of her record-breaking career. Cooper added two more hits and three more runs to her productive day, while Cook had a two-run double, a sacrifice fly and a stolen base.

Meanwhile, senior hurler Jayden Casebolt had a stellar outing in relief. She came in and extinguished the Storm's second-inning rally before finishing the game with 5 1/3 scoreless frames. She employed a nasty change-up on the way to 10 Ks while surrendering just one hit and one walk.
