INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy baseball team dropped both games against Drury on Thursday, snapping the Hounds' five game win streak that dates back to the team's series against Quincy two weeks ago.
Today's two wins also extended Drury's win streak over the Greyhounds to four straight, with the Greyhounds' last win against Drury coming in 14-0 drubbing on April 7, 2023.
Austin Bode and Nick Lukac were the only two Hounds today to record multiple hits in one game, while Cole Hampton and Lukac both recorded multiple RBIs in game one as well. Easton Good also brought his season total of stolen bases to 29 with his stolen base in game two, and putting him at 13th in the nation in division two for stolen bases.
GAME 1 | UIndy 5, Drury 8
Both teams got their bats going early in this one, and scored 11 of the game's first 13 runs in the first five innings. The Panthers got the scoring started in this one with Connor Bain's RBI double followed by a wild pitch which would score Bain from second base to give Drury a 2-0 lead. Nick Lukac responded for UIndy in the second and third frames, with a solo home run to left center and a two-run RBI single to put UIndy out in front 3-2 after three.
Austin Bestul and Nic Besecker came in relief for Frankie Klemm, who pitched the game's first 1.2 innings. Besecker and Bestul combined to pitch the 6.1 innings, recording three punch outs, but were unable to keep Drury at bay, as the Panthers used four runs in the fourth and fifth innings to get back out ahead 6-3.
Cole Hampton, hit his fourth home run today in as many games, to cut into the Panthers' lead, with a no doubt home run to make it 6-5 Drury after five.
Down 8-5 in the bottom of the ninth, UIndy had runners at first and third with one out, but were unsuccessful in driving either runner home, as Luc Fuller kept UIndy stifled, closing out the final two innings, and picking up his fourth save of the season to drop the Hounds 8-5 in game one.
GAME 2 | UIndy 1, Drury 8
The second game of the day was much different than the first game, as the Hounds struggled to generate offense in this one, only notching one run on five hits. Dom Brown, Easton Good, Eli Burkhart, Hampton, and Tré Hondras were the five Hounds with hits today. Good scored the Hounds lone run as well, with a sacrifice fly to center field that brought home Burkhart.
Pitching was a big story in this one as well, with Drury's Gage Hayes pitching a complete game with five strikeouts, making this his second complete outing this season. Carter Nowak, Dylan Kaminski, Jacob Flaherty and Payton Plym all pitched today for UIndy, allowing eight runs on nine hits, with six of those runs coming in the fifth and sixth innings. Flaherty and Kaminski both allowed no runs and no hits, with Kaminski tallying three strikeouts.
Home runs by Jackson Crider and Wyatt Morgan in the fifth and sixth innings, ended up being the game clinchers in this one, as Drury took game two of Thursday's doubleheader 8-1 in a strong all around performance.
