INDIANAPOLIS – The Great Lakes Valley Conference announced Thursday that
Asier Ayllon Prado was voted as the Freshman of the Year. He joins
Matthieu Derache and unanimous selection
David Simeonov on the All-GVC First Team.
Ayllon Prado has competed at a high level all season, regardless of his spot in the singles lineup. He currently holds a 13 match win streak, with a 17-2 overall record in singles competition. Not only has Ayllon Prado not lost a match since February 15th, but he hasn't conceded a set in singles play since March 11th. The fiery Freshman began the season playing #5 singles, and has now moved all the way up to #2 in the singles lineup.
Simeonov has been the mainstay at #1 singles all season, and kicked into high gear as the regular season tailed off. Simeonov is sporting an 11 match win streak, with a 13-4 overall record.
Rounding off the Greyhound All-Conference squad was Derache, who has excelled across multiple spots in the lineup. Derache went undefeated against conference opponents, and maintains a 12-3 record in singles play.
The men's tennis team, off the heels of another GLVC East Division regular season title, had the most All-Conference nods in the GLVC East Division. UIndy was ranked the No. 17 team in the nation in the latest ITA poll, and are set to compete in the GLVC Conference Championship as the #1 seed.
The league also recognized one student-athlete from each team as honorees for the James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award, with Derache earning the nod for the Hounds. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school's two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners.
