ALLENDALE, MI – In the first round of the DII Women's Tennis Championship, the University of Indianapolis women's tennis team staged a 4-2 comeback win against No. 24 Grand Valley State.
The Greyhounds came back from a two-score deficit after picking up four straight singles wins at slots #1, #3, #5 and #6. Today's victory puts them one match away from punching their ticket to the 2025 National Championship tournament in Altamonte Springs, Fla.
INS AND OUTS
The Lakers were on the board first after taking home the doubles point. Estefania Hernandez and Rachel Sam downed Jimena De Pablos Hernando and Suryanshi 6-0 at #2 doubles to lead things off.
The top Greyhound doubles pair of Tyffaine Pais and Sofia Cardenas responded back with a resounding 6-1 win over Neus Ramos and Vale Mozas. '
The hosts clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 win in #3 doubles, where Ipek Sakiroglu and Kalomoira Ralli defeated Suryanshi and Linya Chen.
Singles competition started with the Lakers' growing their lead to 2-0 after Hernandez bested Chen in #4 singles 6-1, 6-3.
After that, the Hounds' comeback train gained momentum from a 6-4 6-2 win from No. 37 Pais, who rolled through Ramos in straight sets.
Cardenas leveled the match at 2-2 after a three-set battle with Ralli, where Cardenas kicked into overdrive and won 6-0, 0-6, 6-0 at #6 singles.
Next on the board for UIndy was Zappoli, who collected a straight-set victory over Sakiroglu in #5 singles. After outlasting her opponent in a first-set tiebreak 7-3, the Freshman dominated the second set 6-2 to hang onto victory.
The Hounds, just one more win away from clinching the match, had the last two matches go down into third-set thrillers. On court two, Suryanshi was in a third-set stalemate with Mozas after taking the first set 6-4, and dropping the second 6-1. On court three, De Pablos Hernando forced a third set with Soteras after falling 6-4 in the first set, and hanging onto a 6-3 win in the second.
Suryanshi and Mozas kept exchanging blows, eventually going into a third-set tiebreak. Before a winner was determined on court two, De Pablos Hernando found a break in Solteras's serving rhythm, and held onto a 6-3 win, sealing victory for the Hounds.
UP NEXT
The Hounds will face the winner of the Rockhurst/Findlay match tomorrow morning at 11 a.m., just one win away from advancing to the National Championship tournament.
