Offensive Explosion Puts UIndy on Brink of Third Straight Super Regional

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – What. A. Game.

It's okay to take a breath after the No. 4 UIndy baseball team slashed five home runs, and 20 hits, en route to a 25-13 victory over the No. 1 seeded Davenport Panthers in a nearly four hour game on Friday afternoon.

These are the most runs scored in an NCAA Tournament game since the Greyhounds scored 19 runs just last season in the same round of the NCAA Midwest Regional tournament against Maryville (5/18/24). And their most runs in a game since the Hounds scored 23 against Missouri S&T last season (3/13/24).

Today's game saw four lead changes and two ties, along with a combined 38 runs and 37 hits between the Hounds and Panthers.

INS & OUTS
Along with a season high in hits and runs, the Hounds also capped off the day with single game high in home runs with five. Brayton Bowen, Chase Mason, Easton Good, Luke Smock and Tré Hondras all smashed a home run today, accounting for 11 of UIndy's 25 runs scored.

The offensive numbers for the Greyhounds today were out of this as the team accounted for their most hits in a game, 20, since the Cardiac Hounds put up a whopping 28 hits against Missouri S&T (3/9/24). Four Greyhounds notched three plus hits today, including Ian Kennedy who went 4-5 with three singles, a double and two RBIs. Good, Nick Lukac and Smock were the other three Greyhounds with three plus hits.

A third offensive record was broken today, as dating back to 2013, UIndy tallied their most single game RBIs as a team with 21. The only game since 2013 with more RBIs came against Notre Dame (Ohio) in 2023 when the Hounds had 26 RBIs. Bowen and Smock both racked up personal season highs of five RBIs, Good and Mason both had three, while Hondras and Kennedy both had two. Cole Hampton had the only other RBI with a ground out fielder's choice to give UIndy their 21st run of the day in the ninth inning.

While pitching wasn't at the top of everyone's mind today, after the Hounds first three pitchers combined to give up 13 runs and 16 hits, the relieving duo of Frankie Klemm and Jacob Flaherty combined to pitch the final three innings only allowing one hit, no walks and no runs. Their performances helped stifle the Panthers offensive explosion after the first six innings, and put UIndy one win away from their third straight NCAA Super Regional appearance.

UP NEXT
UIndy will look to close things out against No. 1 Davenport again tomorrow at 12 p.m., with the possibility of a game three in store at 3:30 p.m. if the Panthers can pull off a game two victory over the Hounds.
