INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 4 seeded UIndy baseball team fell on Thursday in the first game of the Midwest Super Regional to No. 6 seed Northwood, 10-3. Today's game was the first time in program history that UIndy has hosted a Midwest Super Regional game at Bill Bright Field.
UIndy made their third straight appearance in a Midwest Super Regional today, while Northwood was making their first ever program appearance in the Midwest Super Regional.
INS & OUTS
The Hounds didn't find much success today at the plate, only recording six hits and scoring three runs, while the Timberwolves excelled at the plate, knocking in 10 runs on 15 hits. UIndy's first five hitters; Austin Bode, Chase Mason, Cole Hampton, Easton Good, and Nick Lukac, were the only five to record a hit today for the Hounds. In contrast, the Timberwolves had five batters record multi-hit games, with all but one hitter notching a hit.
Both teams found success thanks to the long ball, as five of the game's first eight were scored on a home run. Northwood got the scoring started with a three run blast to right center field in the second inning, while Hampton and Mason both had solo shots in the second and fourth innings to make it 6-2 Northwood.
Pitching was a big story as well, with Northwood's Tyler Sager pitching a strong 98 pitch, seven inning outing, where he recorded four punch outs and allowed three runs. Diego Cardenas and Payton Plym were the two pitchers to make an appearance for the Hounds today. Cardenas also went seven innings, but couldn't manage to keep the Timberwolves off the bases, allowing 14 base runners, and eight runs, with only four of those earned.
Runs in the four of the final five innings pushed the Timberwolves out in front 10-3, with the Hounds' only other run coming on an RBI ground out from Ian Kennedy. Northwood's Dominic Mauro, closed things out over the final two innings, pitching a perfect final two frames to clinch the game one win for Northwood over UIndy.
UP NEXT
After today's loss the Hounds are now in the do or die territory of their season. They'll need to win the next two games against Northwood to earn their third consecutive trip to Cary N.C, and the NCAA DII College World Series. Game two is tomorrow at 2 p.m. right back at Bill Bright Field.
