Hounds' Stellar Seniors Dominate Lewis in Saturday Doubleheader

INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy baseball team dominated in both games against Lewis on Saturday, a day after dropping the first two games of this weekend's crucial four game series for both teams.

Game two of today's doubleheader tied UIndy's largest margin of victory over Lewis since 2008 when the Hounds beat the Flyers 18-3.

Of the 11 Greyhounds who made a plate appearance today, 10 got on base, while nine of those 11 batters recorded at least one hit in one of the two games of the doubleheader.

GAME 3 | UIndy 9, Lewis 3
On senior day, right-handed pitcher Carter Nowak threw his second career complete game with a clinical seven inning performance where he only gave up five hits and two earned runs while punching out two. His only other complete game performance came against Southwest Baptist in his junior season (3/23/24).

Nowak wasn't the only one to find success in game three, seniors Cole Hampton, Easton Good, Ian Kennedy and Nick Lukac were responsible for five of the Hounds' first eight runs of the game. Brayton Bowen and Chase Mason drove home the Hounds' other three runs in the first four innings. Bowen's two run no doubt home run off the bubble, and Mason's RBI single gave UIndy an 8-0 lead early.

Along with strong pitching and hitting the Hounds defense was stellar today, as the team turned a season high three double plays, keeping the Flyers offense at bay. Lewis posted 36 hits and 24 runs in two games yesterday against the Hounds, but today was all UIndy, as the Hounds rebounded and took game three 9-3 over Lewis.

GAME 4 | UIndy 16, Lewis 4
Another senior pitcher was the story in this one as Frankie Klemm pitched a strong six innings, which is his second straight game going at least six innings. Klemm's day consisted of four strikeouts while only allowing five hits and two earned runs, the exact same stat line in the earned runs and hits column as Nowak earlier in the day.

Along with his strong pitching performance today, Klemm also finished the season with the lowest ERA among all starting pitching for the Hounds, and an unbeaten 4-0 record.

The Hounds continued their hot hitting in game four, posting a .419 team batting average while also driving in 16 runs. Bowen and Lukac were responsible for four of the team's 13 hits and nine of the team's 16 runs. Bowen hit a grand slam into right field in the first inning while Lukac's two run RBI double and single in the second and third innings extended UIndy's lead to 10-3.

Austin Bode, Bret Perry, and Ian Kennedy drove in the next five runs for UIndy in the sixth inning, putting UIndy ahead 15-3.  Lukac put the finishing touch on the Hounds' win in the sixth inning with a fielder's choice single to push UIndy out in front 16-3.

Just one day after allowing 36 hits and 24 runs, the Hounds responded with 26 hits and 25 runs of their own to split the weekend series against Lewis, and put the Hounds in prime position heading into the GLVC tournament.

UP NEXT
The Hounds will now look to continue their two win momentum into postseason play on Wednesday May 7 at the GLVC tournament, with the hopes of winning the teams first GLVC postseason title since 2016.
