SPRINGFIELD, ILL. - In the Semifinal of the GLVC Championship Tournament, the University of Indianapolis men's tennis team took down Drury 4-1. The Greyhounds have extended their win streak up to 14, and will face Rockhurst in the Tournament Championship in search of their third-straight GLVC Tournament Championship tomorrow at 2 PM.
INS AND OUTS
After hard-fought battles in all three matches, UIndy took the first point of the match in doubles competiton, picking up wins in the #1 and #3 slots.
The Hounds were on the board first with a 6-2 victory in #2 doubles, where GLVC Freshman of the Year
Asier Ayllon Prado and
Tadeo Gaggiofatto overpowered Oscar Reis and Alejandro Esquivel 6-2. The Panthers responded with a win at #3 doubles, where Mark Drozdetskii and Chuy Gonzalez bested
Manu Lanteri and
Lorenzo Di Cursi 6-3 to level the doubles point at 1-1.
To pencil in the first point of the match, the #1 doubles team of
David Simeonov and
Matthieu Derache outpaced Yaroslav Sharyy and Lukas Reiber 6-4, who came into the match as the No. 22 doubles tandem in the nation.
In singles competition, Lanteri extended the UIndy lead up to 2-0 with a win at #3 singles, blitzing Matthieu Gachon 6-3 6-1 at the #3 singles position. Ayllon Prado followed Lanteri's triumph with a grueling straight-set victory over Gonzalez at #2 singles. After a grueling 8-6 tiebreak win in the first set, Ayllon Prado pounced on Gonzalez 6-2 in the second set, putting the Hounds up by three points.
Moments later, Drury was able to chip into the 3-0 deficit with a win from No. 28 Sharyy at #1 singles, where he defeated Simeonov 7-5 6-4.
The Hounds clinched the match with a resounding win at #5 singles, where Gaggiofatto stumped Drozdetskii 6-1 6-4 to seal the deal for the Hounds.
