Hounds Walk Off Stars, Capture Conference Crown

EAST PEORIA, Ill.  – The sixth-seeded UIndy softball team on Sunday completed an unbeaten run through the GLVC Tournament, culminating in the program's fourth conference tournament championship. Behind the resilient arm of GLVC Freshman of the Year Cheyenne Eads and a number of clutch offensive and defesnive moments, the Greyhounds swept through the bracket with a perfect 4-0 record, capped by a 2-1 win versus No. 5-seed Illinois Springfield in the championship game.

The Hounds earned the league automatic bid to the NCAA DII Midwest Regional. Seeding and location will be announced on NCAA.com on Monday, May 5 at 10 a.m. ET.

INS & OUTS
The Prairie Stars struck first with a run in the opening frame. The damage may have been greater, but centerfielder Sydney Oliver cut down a would-be run at the plate to diffuse the rally.

The score remained at 1-0 all the way until the bottom of the sixth when the Hounds finally broke through against Springfield's All-GLVC First Team pitcher Rosie Bartletti.

As she has done countless times in her Greyhound career, Jocelyn Calvin came up big for UIndy. With two on and one out, the senior from Plainfield sent a 2-2 pitch back up the middle to plate Cara Cooper and tie the game.

After Eads retired the Stars in order in the top of the seventh, the Hounds were once again in business in the final frame. Shelby Cook started things with a one-out single, bringing up junior catcher Ella Palm. The first-year Hound fell behind 0-2 but battled back to a full count before singling to keep the rally rolling.

Back to the top of the order, freshman Brooklyn Willis jumped on the first pitch, sending to ball back up the middle, nearly hitting Cook on its way to centerfield. Cook got the green light at third and beat the throw to the plate, giving UIndy the walk-off win.

Eads (23-10) earned were fourth pitching win of the week, allowing just the first-inning run while striking out four and walking only one.
