GREENWOOD, Ind. – In the first round of the NCAA Midwest Regional, the No. 17 University of Indianapolis men's tennis team swept No. 27 Purdue Northwest 4-0, securing a spot in the Midwest Regional Final.
This is the second sweep in a row for the Greyhounds, who have extended their win streak to 16 matches with today's win. They will face No. 30 Ferris State in tomorrow's regional final, for a chance to punch their ticket to NCAA DII Championship.
INS & OUTS
The Hounds drew first blood in doubles competition, plucking resounding wins at positions #1 and #2 to draw a 1-0 lead.
Asier Ayllon Prado and Tadeo Gaggiofatto had no trouble with Joao Martins and Francisco Lanuesse in #2 doubles, raking in a 6-1 win. David Simeonov and Matthieu Derache rolled through the No. 34-ranked doubles tandem of Samuel Dickson and Alex Van Lumich 6-2 in #1 doubles to obtain the first point.
Singles play started with a bagel and breadstick from Derache at #4 singles, where he overpowered Martins 6-0, 6-1 to extend the UIndy lead up to 2-0.
Manu Lanteri was next to add to the Greyhound total with his win at #3 singles, taking down Dani Chicago 6-3, 6-2.
The sweeping effort was completed by Gaggiofatto at #5 singles, as he dominated the first set 6-1, and held onto the second set 6-4.
UP NEXT
The Hounds will square off against the Bulldogs in the Midwest Regional final tomorrow, May 10 at 2 p.m., where both teams return to Center Grove High School vying to make the field of 16 at Nationals.
