Hounds Come Up Short at Findlay, 38-35

FINDLAY, Ohio – The No. 17-ranked UIndy football team endured a tough road game at the University of Findlay Saturday afternoon. A pair of turnovers and a strong Findlay rushing game conspired against the Greyhounds in a 38-35 final.

INS & OUTS
The Hounds looked to be in control through most of the first half, twice building a 10-point lead, but the host Oilers flipped the script in the final minute of the second quarter. After Devin Nelson's second TD made it 17-7 UIndy late in the half, Findlay managed to find the endzone twice in the final 57 seconds to take a 21-17 edge into the locker room.

UIndy later trailed by 11 midway through the fourth quarter, but the Hounds responded with a quick touchdown drive and a successful two-point conversion to cut it to three with 4:09 to go. Senior QB Gavin Sukup earned his first rushing touchdown of the year and promptly punched it in himself on the two-point try, making it 31-28 Findlay.

A perfect kickoff by Colin Seymour pinned the Oilers inside their own 10-yard line, and moments later the UIndy D forced a 3rd & 11. Findlay converted, however, with a timely 29-yard pass play to extend the possession, one play before breaking off a 65-yard rushing touchdown to all but seal it.

UIndy reached the end zone one last time, as Sukup found Cobi Lewis for a 26-yard strike—one of three Hounds with a 20-plus-yard reception on the drive. With 19 ticks left, UIndy's ensuing onside kick was recovered by the Oilers, cementing the final score.

INSIDE THE BOX
- In his first career start, redshirt-freshman Kaleb Dotson corralled a pair of interceptions, both in the second quarter. He took one back 60 yards to the house before it was called back.
- Eight Hounds had at least two catches on the day, led by Lewis with five grabs for 76 yards.
- Eli Liapis led all players with nine tackles, while Cornell Branch IV, Danny Royster and Wrigley Franklin had a sack apiece.
- Just three points total were scored in the first and third quarters combined.
- Findlay's 272 rushing yards were the most surrendered by the Hounds since Oct. 9, 2021.

UP NEXT
UIndy has its home opener on tap next weekend, hosting non-conference Ashland University on Saturday, Sept. 13. The atypical kickoff is set for 2 p.m. Ashland was ranked No. 23 in last week's DII coaches poll.
