INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy football team erased a 12-point fourth-quarter deficit to down visiting Ashland Saturday afternoon, 33-26. The Greyhound defense forced three turnovers in the final period while sophomore running back
Garrett Sherrell added a pair of late touchdowns.
INS & OUTS
After a scoreless first quarter from both teams, the Hounds got on the board on the first play of the second quarter.
Gavin Sukup found a streaking
Colton Wilkie with a 14-yard touchdown for the first score of the afternoon.
Â
The Greyhound pass rush turned up the heat later in the quarter, as back-to-back sacks from Indy-native
Danny Royster led to another Greyhound TD. Royster's second sack popped the ball out of the Eagle QB's hands, setting up
Alvin Contreras for a 43-yard scoop-and-score to make it 14-3 Hounds.
Â
Â
Nevertheless, Ashland clawed back and eventually pulled ahead, running off 23 answered points to build a 26-14 advantage early in the fourth quarter.
Â
That's when the Hounds started to cook. The offense promptly marched down the field to make it a one-possession game with 10 minutes to go.
Alonzo Derrick had three catches for 44 yards on the drive ahead of Sherrell's one-yard TD plunge.
Â
Later with Ashland crafting an effective drive of its own, the UIndy defense came up with a big takeaway, as Contreras' first career INT set up the go-head score. Sukup had three completions of 11 yards or more on the ensuing drive, while Sherrell once again capped the possession with a one-yard touchdown.
Â
Â
The cherry on top came in the waning seconds. Backed up deep in their own territory with only two seconds on the clock, the Eagles desperately tried a number of laterals before fumbling in their own end zone. Contreras pounced on the ball to tack on six more points and add to an already-exciting finish.
