Overtime Thriller Secures Spot in GLVC Semifinals

INDIANAPOLIS - The UIndy men's soccer team delivered in the clutch to punch their ticket to the GLVC Championships with a 2-1 win in the second overtime period against the Quincy Hawks.

Early on the two high powered offenses looked to attack the others with backline, leading to the Greyhounds picking up two offside calls before their first shot in the 12th minute from Hugo Paturel.

The visitors challenged the hosts early with three shots in the opening 20 minutes, including the opening goal of the game in the 20th minute.

After the goal Quincy continued to fire in shots and control possession, but when UIndy mixed up their on field lineup with substitutes they started to regain more control of possession and the game.

One of those subs was Alejandro Zuniga who sent in a shot right after coming onto the field which was soon followed by a shot on goal from Sam Siegel who initiated offense while shutting down the offense of Quincy throughout.

The Greyhounds came out of half swinging with a trio coming their way in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, but no shots on goal following.

The physical battle between the two schools continued with three cards being awarded between the two teams in the following 10 minutes before Siegel willed his team back even with a decisive strike in the 69th minute for his second goal of the season.

The Greyhounds continued their efforts to end the match in regulation as they raced forward with their midfield and eventually gained a man up advantage because of a second yellow being awarded to a Quincy defender.

The foul set up a set piece from just outside the Quincy box which Zuniga took and ricocheted off the crossbar in the 87th minute.

Then, with the contest being a postseason matchup, the teams headed to overtime. GLVC tournament rules state that there are two 10 minute "sudden death" overtime periods, meaning that the first goal to be scored in those periods ends the game.

The two teams then headed to the first of two overtime periods with the Greyhounds starting with the ball which they controlled for the majority of the first overtime period.

The Hounds found a number of opportunities, but none more promising than their chance in the 97th minute which was saved again by Quincy.

The second overtime went similarly with UIndy controlling the ball throughout, but the Greyhounds found the golden goal off the right foot of Zuniga who was assisted by Joey Longo. The goal secured the Greyhounds' spot in the GLVC semifinal against No. 1 seeded Lincoln, who the Greyhounds tied 1-1 at home earlier this season.

The win marked the first overtime win in GLVC tournament play for UIndy since their 3-2 win over Drury in 2013.

The Greyhounds will make the trip to Springfield, Missouri to take on the No. 1 seeded, and No. 8 nationally, Lincoln Blue Tigers at the Cooper Sports Complex at 4:00 p.m. Central Time.
