INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 25-ranked UIndy wrestling team concluded its regular season this past weekend at the Greyhound Duals and the Greyhound Open, and will now head to Lebanon, Ill. for the GLVC Championships on Sunday Feb. 15.
The Greyhounds' first dual will be against No. 5-seeded Quincy at 10 a.m. ET, with the winner set to take on the No. 1-seed McKendree in the semifinals.
This is the same exact path the Greyhounds saw a year ago at the GLVC Championships, taking on Quincy first before the winner is set to face off against McKendree.
UIndy is coming off a 2-1 weekend at the Greyhound Duals, where they took down Kentucky Wesleyan and Thomas More by a combined team score of 91-15. The team's lone loss came in a back-and-forth affair against Grand Valley State who came into the weekend ranked No. 4 in the country.
This weekend's lineup will include multiple nationally ranked wrestlers for UIndy; Nathan Smith (125), Aidan Sprague (133), Gavin Garcia (149) and Cale Gray (285). Those four are looking to jump start their push towards a possible national tournament appearance, with Nathan Smith and Cale Gray looking to make it back-to-back appearances to the national championship tournament.Â
Along with those four, Michael Ortega has been another name to make headway for the Hounds in previous duals at the 157 weight class, which includes two pin victories and a top-15 upset win over Grand Valley's No. 14-ranked Maclain Morency at this past weekend's Greyhound Duals. As well as Oretga, Christian Chavez at 184 has earned seven dual wins since the start of the new year for UIndy, including taking down the No. 15-ranked wrestler at 184 for Upper Iowa, Braxton Westendorf.Â
The Greyhounds will look to best its fourth place finish from just a season ago at 10 a.m. ET against Quincy on Sunday.
