Hounds Garner Fourth Place Finish at GLVC Championships

LEBANON, Ill. – For the second consecutive season the UIndy wrestling team took home fourth place honors at the GLVC Championships. The Greyhounds went 1-2 on the day, with a dominant win over the No. 5-seed, Quincy, and had a battle against top-seeded McKendree, which was decided by just nine points combined between the 10 matches.

The team picked up 16 individual wins on the day, including a perfect 3-0 day from Cale Gray (285) and a 2-0 days from Aidan Sprague (133), Nathan Smith (125), and Zach Haughton (141).

INS & OUTS
The Greyhounds almost completed the clean sweep in the team's first dual of the day, picking up wins in nine of 10 matches against Quincy. The day started with major decision wins at both 125 and 133 from Smith and Sprague, before the Hounds reeled off two pin fall victories, two decisions and a tech fall win.

The two pin fall wins came from Gavin Garcia with a first period fall at 149, while Logan Farnell (157) garnered a second period pin fall win after jumping out to a commanding 9-0 lead. Shane Bates at 165 kept the momentum going, earning five team points with a third period tech fall win that ended due to two third period take downs.

Zach Haughton (141) and the freshman Michael Ortega (157) picked up the two decision wins with both guys needing a defensive minded third period to claim their three point wins.

Ethan Farnell (197) and Cale Gray (285) closed out the day for UIndy with two tech fall wins by a combined 33-3 score between the two of them, which ultimately concluded the Hounds' 41-6 win over Quincy to advance to the semi finals.

INS & OUTS
The Greyhounds jumped out to an early 10-4 lead over the Bearcats with two decision wins from Smith (125) and Garcia (149), while Sprague's big eight point second period propelled him to a win at 133.

Following UIndy's early six point lead, the Bearcats went on a five match win streak to retake the lead by 12. Even though there were five straight wins, four of these five matches were dog fights. With the matches at 174, 184, and 197 being battles to the very end.

Bates and Waltz were tied at 0-0 headed into the third period, and Waltz captured an early third period escape to take a 1-0 with riding time on his side. With Bates needing a take down, he took multiple shots, but was unsuccessful, ending the match with a 2-0 defeat.

Similarly to the 174 bout, the 184 bout between Chavez and Johnson resulted in a similar outcome, with Chavez needing a third period take down after falling down 1-0 in the third with Johnson controlling the match's riding time, he wasn't able to take Johnson down and fell 2-0 as well.

Now down six points, the freshman Farnell needed to pull off the upset against the No. 5-ranked Kvien at 197. Farnell fell behind in the second period due to a take down, and needed one of his own to send the match to sudden victory. Farnell had his chance with 40 seconds left in the match to take down Kvien, but Kvien was able to use a reversal of Farnell's take down attempt to give him the 5-0 win the Bearcats needed to advance.

Gray (285) capped off the dual with a 7-0 decision win with a take down, reversal, a penalty and riding time, to capture his second win of the day.
