Hounds Drop Second Straight On The Road

ST. LOUIS — The UIndy women's basketball team was unable to overcome a 32-point fourth quarter, falling to Maryville, 67-37, at Moloney Arena.

This is the second time in the last two seasons that the Greyhounds have scored 37 points, the other time coming last season against Lewis. Autumn Rucker scored a game-high 17 points on 6-for-10 shooting, while Amyrah Sapenter was next in the scoring column for UIndy with seven points.

The game began with Lindsey Schadewalt putting the home team on the board first with a three-pointer at 7:57. Claire Lueken assisted on another three-pointer by Gracie Gopalan, pushing Maryville's lead to 6-0 at 6:32. UIndy's Patricia Chikamba responded with a jumper in the paint at 4:26, starting a comeback. Amyrah Sapenter hit a three-pointer at 3:50, narrowing the gap to 8-5, and later tied the game with two free throws at 1:02. However, Gopalan's second three-pointer with 38 seconds left gave Maryville a 12-9 lead to end the first quarter.

The second quarter was marked by a sequence of turnovers and missed opportunities from both teams. Early in the quarter, Adylan Ayer's jumper at 8:57 extended the home team's advantage, while the Greyhounds responded with Ruby Garner's jumper at 7:49, assisted by Halie Gilbert, bringing them within three points. However, Maryville capitalized on UIndy's turnovers and expanded its lead with a three from Madyson Rigdon at 5:25. The quarter concluded with Autumn Rucker's layup with six second left, reducing the deficit, but with the Saints still ahead 21-17 at the end of the half.

Maryville took control in the third quarter, extending its lead with a series of pivotal plays. Gilbert opened the scoring with a layup at 9:27, assisted by Sapenter, bringing the score to 21-19. However, Maryville responded with a strong defensive effort, forcing turnovers and capitalizing on fast breaks. Helen Ben's free throws at 5:31, followed by her layup at 5:00, increased the lead to 25-19. Gopalan's three-pointer at 3:56 and Olivia Hahn's three-pointer at 1:57 further solidified Maryville's advantage. Maryville closed the quarter with a fast-break layup by Ben at 0:23, ending the quarter with a 35-19 lead over the Greyhounds.

Maryville secured a decisive victory over the Greyhounds with a strong performance in the fourth quarter, outscoring the visitors 32-18. Schadewalt led the scoring for Maryville, contributing crucial baskets including a layup at 7:02 and a three-pointer at 5:35. UIndy's Rucker responded with multiple layups, but the team struggled to keep pace. Lueken's assist on Annika Pluemer's three at 6:38 further extended the Saints' lead. As the quarter concluded, Hahn and Bree Shannon each added a three pointer each, cementing Maryville's win with a final score of 67-37.

INSIDE THE BOX
- The Hounds shot its worst percentage from the field this season with today's shooting performance, going 12-for-53 (.226).
- Sanaa Thomas and Sapenter made the only two threes for UIndy today.
- UIndy scored 18 points in the paint tonight.
