Softball Splits Home-Opening Twin Bill Versus Jewell

INDIANAPOLIS – Playing in front of the home faithful for the first time this spring, the No. 9 UIndy softball team split a GLVC doubleheader versus William Jewell Saturday afternoon at Baumgartner Field. The Greyhounds snapped a 12-game winning streak with a 6-3 loss in opener before rebounding with a 9-1 run-rule win in game 2.

On Sunday, the Hounds will host the Hawks of Rockhurst University at local Beech Grove High School. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for noon ET.

GAME 1 | Jewell 6, UIndy 3
UIndy crafted a three-run rally in the bottom of the fifth but it wasn't enough to overcome the Cardinals' five-run outburst an inning prior. Later, the Hounds loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh but ultimately couldn't cash in.

The result tagged sophomore starter Cheyenne Eads (12-1) with her first loss of the season. She struck out five in four-plus inning and was charged with all six runs—though only one was earned. Sophomore Josie Jager finished the game in the circle, tossing three scoreless innings and allowing just one hit.

At the plate, Brooklyn Willis led the way with two hits, including an RBI single in the fifth and a double to lead off the seventh. Christina Stankus had a hit and a run scored, and both Cara Cooper and Sydney Oliver recorded two walks.

GAME 2 | UIndy 9, Jewell 1 (5 innings)
The Greyhounds wasted little time jumping on the Cardinals in the capper, launching multi-run homers in each of the first three innings. Josie Jager got the Hounds on the board with a three-run blast in the first, while Brooklyn Willis and Maya Rodriguez followed with two-run shots in the second and third innings, respectively.

Meanwhile, Caitlin Bunte (11-1) continued to rack up outs in her freshman campaign, finishing with a complete-game three-hitter. She faced just one over the minimum through the first four frames before surrendering a solo home run in the fifth—the only damage she would sustain.

Six Greyhound batters had two base hits, while all nine of them had at least one hit or one walk. UIndy has combined to hit 12 home runs in the last 10 games, including six from Willis alone.
