INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 3 UIndy women's lacrosse team picked up its second ranked win on the short season on Friday night against No. 21 Grand Valley, 16-12.
The Greyhounds had nine different goalscorers tonight, including three with hat tricks; Elle Cimini, Malaena Michielin and Olivia Bladon. Bladon led the charge with four goals and an assist, but once again Michielin stuffed the stat sheet with her third consecutive six point game, three goals and three assists.
Dating back to the start of the 2024-25 season, this is the ninth such outing where the Greyhounds have had three players with at least three goals in a game.
Along with a strong attacking effort, Hollis Rang had one of the best defensive games of her career with four ground balls and five caused turnovers. She's only posted four ground balls and five caused turnovers once before against Lewis last season.
INS & OUTS
Once again the Greyhounds kept its trend going of hot starts, racking up five goals to lead after the first quarter. UIndy has led after every first quarter this season. Megan Ghert got the scoring started with Cimini, Emily Ghazal, Sage Da Silva, and the freshman Margaret Galloway all grabbing one of their own.
The second quarter was all Lakers, as they clawed their way back by turning defense into offense, with six UIndy turnovers resulting in six Grand Valley goals. Bladon scored a goal in the middle of the second quarter to put the Hounds back ahead 8-6, but the Lakers' Ella Boose scored a late goal to make it 8-7 UIndy headed to the break.
But the second half adjustments favored the Hounds with the third quarter all UIndy. Similar to the Lakers in the second quarter, the Hounds turned defense into offense in large part to Rang's defensive presence, causing three turnovers and picking up two ground balls. Cimini snagged two more goals, with Reese Fahlke and Bladon also getting into the third quarter stat sheet to give UIndy a 12-8 lead after three.
UIndy tallied three more goals early in the fourth to go ahead by seven, and was able to see the game out over the final eight minutes of action to secure the four-point win over No. 21-ranked Grand Valley.
