ST. LOUIS – To open GLVC competition, the No. 43 UIndy women's tennis team defeated Maryville 5-2. The win gave the Greyhounds their sixth in-region win, while moving their record to 6-9.Â
After a narrow fall in doubles play, UIndy responded with force in singles competition, winning five of six matches.Â
INS AND OUTS
Doubles hosted a tight battle that came down to a tiebreak at #2 doubles, where Maryville ultimately got on the board first. The Hounds and Saints traded blows on courts #1 and #3 to put the decision up to court #2. Jimena De Pablos Hernando and Sofia Cardenas took a 6-2 win at #3 doubles, while Nazli Saka and Isabella Alvarez posted a 6-2 win over Silvia Zappoli and Magda Kornijczuk at #1 doubles.Â
Noelle Compton and Maelys Thiery-James were in a heated duel with Luana Luerson and Grace Brown, going to a breaker after a competitive match. Luerson and Brown found a late service break and ultimately won 10-8, giving the Saints the opening point.Â
The tide shifted in singles for UIndy, where all five wins came in straight sets. The Hounds found their first result from De Pablos Hernando, who served Alvarez a double breadstick, winning 6-1, 6-1 at #2 singles. Cardenas and Zappoli respectively cruised past their opponents on courts #5 and #6, both dishing out 6-2, 6-1 wins.Â
Kornijczuk was next to finish in the winner's circle, downing Mira Vasileva 6-1, 7-5 at #3 singles. The afternoon was capped on court #1, where Thiery-James took down Saka 7-6, 7-5.Â
