INDIANAPOLIS – The UIndy baseball team split its doubleheader on Saturday against UMSL, with the Hounds taking game one with a 3-0 shutout win, followed by a 9-8 Tritons win.Â
Ayden Tran threw his best game for the Hounds to date in game one, tossing a complete seven innings, allowing no runs on four hits, while punching out nine, including three of the final five batters to end the game. Tran has thrown two seven inning complete games before today's outing, once against Davenport and once against Washburn.
Today's games were delayed by an hour due to rain in the Indianapolis area in the morning.
GAME 1 | UIndy 3, UMSL 0
There wasn't much offense in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, with the Hounds only recording four hits on the day, but still found a way to manage base runners off of the right-handed Eli Cartwright, who just two weeks ago threw a no hitter against Southwest Baptist. UIndy tacked on seven walks to Cartwright's name in just 3 ? inning pitched, finding the game's first run on a bases loaded walk in the second.Â
Garrett Rusch added the Hounds' second run of the game just an inning later on a solo shot to right field, making that his sixth home run of the 2026 campaign. This is his first homer since his two home run game against Southwest Baptist in March.
Bret Perry added the Greyhounds' final run of the game in the sixth on a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt down the first base line that brought home Joey Humphrey to give UIndy a 3-0 lead, and the eventual win.Â
Tran's performance highlighted game one, recording a collegiate career best nine strikeouts in seven innings pitched. Today's complete game from Tran is the seventh complete game for the Greyhounds starting pitcher rotation this year, with Tran leading the way with three of his own.
GAME 2 | UIndy 8, UMSL 9
Game two on Saturday was all Tritons early, with UMSL getting after Kaleb Marrs early, including a three-run home run in the second inning from Bennett Cagle that capped a four run second inning. The Greyhounds were able to find one run in the first on a Gavin Duran sacrifice fly, but were held to only ____ hits the rest of the way. Â
Following a pitching change in the fourth, UMSL added two more runs to its tally for the day on a pair of sacrifice flies from Justin Terhaar and Owen Faith to give UMSL a 6-1 lead after four.Â
But the Greyhounds weren't done, as they began a rally in the fifth inning. They snatched back four runs, starting with a three run shot from Joey Humphrey, followed by a perfect execution on the bases from UIndy when Duran attempted to steal second, creating a force out at second which allowed for Bret Perry to comfortably steal home in the process.Â
After Mitch Bonzckowski's two run home run in the sixth, the Hounds needed three runs to extend the game. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Brayton Bowen came in as a pinch hitter with two runners on and drove both runners in to cut the lead to one, 9-8, for UMSL. Rusch had a chance to tie or win the game for UIndy, but flew out to right field with a runner on second.
