Women's Tennis Eyes Run in GLVC Championship Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS – This weekend, the UIndy women's tennis team is set to defend their title at the GLVC Championship Tournament at Center Grove High School in Greenwood, IN. 

UIndy comes into the tournament as the #2 seed in the East, and will face Southwest Baptist, the #3 seed in the West, in the quarterfinals on Friday, May 1, at 2:30 PM.

The field will host the top-three teams based on highest divisional winning percentage from each of the GLVC's two divisions. It is a single-elimination format with a Championship match conducted on Sunday.

On the season, UIndy sits at 9-10 on the season, with a 3-1 clip in GLVC play. They will enter the Championship Tournament on a five match win streak.

The Hounds were featured in the NCAA Regional Rankings, coming in at No. 8 in the Midwest this past Wednesday. The Hounds moved up one spot from last week's batch after a 7-0 win against McKendree last Saturday. UIndy currently maintains a record of 9-8 against DII opponents, with an 8-3 mark against in-region competition. UIndy also owns the seventh strongest regional win-loss percentage, while owning a top-50 ranked win against Tiffin. 

Individually, Sofia Cardenas leads UIndy in singles wins on the season, holding a 16-2 overall record across dual and tournament play. Her and Jimena De Pablos Hernando own the team's best record in doubles play, sitting at 13-6 on the season. De Pablos Hernando also holds a respectable mark in singles play, with a 14-4 overall clip. 

Freshman Maelys Thiery-James sits atop the lineup playing #1 in singles. She enters the weekend with seven wins on the season, and a 3-1 mark in league play. 

Keep an eye out for Liza Simak, Silvia Zappoli, and Magda Kornijczuk, who both come into the tournament with notable winning streaks in singles. Simak has won her last four matches playing #4 singles, with five wins in total. Zappoli has also won four-straight singles matches, nine wins throughout the season. Kornijczuk comes into the weekend on a three match winning streak in singles, with 10 overall wins on the year.
