GREENWOOD, IN - In a rematch of the 2025 GLVC Championship, the UIndy women's tennis team overpowered Rockhurst 4-2. The Greyhounds extend their win streak to five, while advancing to tomorrow's championship match against UMSL.
After dropping the deciding tiebreak in doubles, UIndy responded with a trio of quick singles wins, sealed by a gritty finish from
Sofia Cardenas.
INS AND OUTS
The Hounds fell just short in doubles, falling 1-2 in a narrow tiebreak. The Hawks were on the board first after Calima Zeyra and Zuzanna Szmyd downed
Silvia Zappoli and
Magda Kornijczuk 6-4 at #1 doubles. UIndy found a response from Cardenas and
Jimena De Pablos Hernando on court #3, defeating Maria Baez and Sofia Valdespino in a tiebreak.
It came down to the breaker on court #2, which was ultimately clinched by Ella Coleman and Marina Magai, who bested
Liza Simak and
Maelys Thiery-James.
De Pablos Hernando had quick answer in singles to level the match at 1-1, finishing Valdespino 6-3, 6-0 on court #2. Kornijczuk was next to finish for the Hounds, closing out Zeyra 6-2, 6-2 at #3 singles,
UIndy then gained a 3-1 lead after Zappoli finished Magai 6-3, 6-1 on court #5. Moments later, the Hawks found their first singles win, after No. 38 Coleman overcame Thiery-James 6-2, 6-4 at #1 singles.
The match closed with a gutsy performance on court #6 from Cardenas, who defeated Baez after finishing the first set 6-1, and a 7-5 win in the second after overcoming a 5-3 deficit.
