ALLENDALE, Mich. – The
Cardiac Hounds of 2024 reared its head again today as UIndy took down the No. 4 team in the nation, Grand Valley, 6-5 in game one of the NCAA DII Midwest Super Regional.Â
Today's win is the fifth ranked win of the season for the Greyhounds, and is the highest ranked win for the Greyhounds since
2021 when UIndy beat No. 2 Lindenwood at home.
Gavin Duran recorded his seventh multi-hit game in the last contests today, collecting three hits and three RBIs, while
Garrett Rusch,
Luke Smock,
Chase Mason,
Bret Perry, and
Austin Bode were the only other Greyhounds with a hit in today's game.Â
The Hounds never trailed in today's game, and marks the team's first win over the Lakers since
2024.
INS & OUTS
The offensive output started early for the Hounds, getting eight base runners in the first two innings, which led to four second inning runs.
Joey Humphrey and Bode got the scoring going with an error and a sac fly to give UIndy a 2-0 lead, which was later capped off by a Duran two-run RBI double that ended with a smooth swim move at the plate from Perry to quadruple the Hounds' lead over the Lakers after two.Â
Â
A pair of RBI singles in the fourth and sixth innings from Mason and Duran, respectively, got UIndy to a five run lead with three frames to play. The duo of Duran and Mason have combined for 31 hits in postseason play for UIndy, dating back to the team's first game of the GLVC Tournament against
Maryville.
Aidan Pearson and Collin Bradley duked it out on the mound today, with Pearson getting the upper hand in terms of innings pitched, going seven strong with both guys punching out three in one another's outings. Following Pearson's seven innings, the reliable duo of
Griffin Hallahan and
Drake Downing came in to set up and close things out for UIndy. And they did just that, pitching a combined two innings with only four hits allowed, and was punctuated with a bases loaded strikeout for Downing in the bottom of the ninth to give him his eighth save and the Hounds one win away from Cary, N.C.
