WEST PALM BEACH and BOCA RATON, Fla. — The UIndy volleyball team split its final day in the Sunshine State on Saturday, sweeping Nova Southeastern before falling to No. 15 Lynn in the nightcap.
Saturday marked UIndy and Nova Southeastern's first meeting since 2008, the win raising the Hounds' season total to 10 this fall.
UINDY 3, NSU 0
The Greyhounds finished with 50 kills and a .314 hitting percentage while holding Nova Southeastern to 33 kills and a .130 mark. Freshman
Amaree Haralson dished out 24 of the team's 45 assists, while fellow setter
Carly Fonda finished with 13 helpers and a pair of kills.
Nova Southeastern opened the first set by scoring the first five points, including three Abbie Roth service aces, before kills by
Maddie Lynch and
Makenzie Pflederer helped the Greyhounds cut the deficit to 5-3. Nova Southeastern later led 13-10, but the Greyhounds won the next seven points, getting kills from
Grace Portwood and Lynch, a
Riley Laine block and another Portwood kill to move in front 17-13. After Nova Southeastern closed to 21-18, Pflederer put down kills for the Greyhounds' next three points, and a Caiden Largent attack error ended the set 25-19 for the Greyhounds.
Nova Southeastern built an 8-1 lead before the Greyhounds worked back into the set, getting kills from
Allison Jansen,
Caitlin Blomberg, Portwood, and Fonda along with a Pflederer ace to cut the margin to 11-9. After Nova Southeastern moved back ahead 14-10, the Greyhounds answered again with a block by Pflederer, as well as kills from Lynch and Jansen to tie the set at 16-16. Nova Southeastern led 18-16, but Blomberg and
Kelsey McKenney put down kills around a Nova Southeastern point, and Haralson followed a Blomberg kill at 19-19 with a service ace before McKenney's block helped the Greyhounds go in front 21-19. Lynch and Pflederer added late kills, the Greyhounds reached set point at 24-21, and a Nova Southeastern service error closed the set for the Greyhounds, 25-22.
After Nova Southeastern moved ahead 8-7 in the third set, the Greyhounds tied it on an attack error and went in front 9-8 on McKenney's kill. The Greyhounds stretched the advantage to 14-9 with kills from McKenney and Pflederer before Nova Southeastern closed the gap to 15-13 behind three straight points. The Greyhounds led 19-15 after McKenney's kill, but Nova Southeastern pulled within 19-18 on a kill by Erika Spankus and consecutive service aces. Blomberg, Portwood, and Lynch answered with kills down the stretch, and the Greyhounds finished the set and match 25-21 on a Jansen kill.
LYNN 3, UINDY 0
The opening set stayed tight through 8-8, with McKenney putting down two early kills and teaming with Portwood on a block. Lynn moved back in front with kills from Alexia Radulovic and Zara Rendic, then used Greyhounds errors and an Ella Voorhees ace to stretch the margin to 16-10. Portwood and McKenney answered with kills for the Greyhounds, and McKenney added back-to-back points later to make it 20-14, but Lynn continued to trade sideouts and reached set point at 24-16.
Allison Jansen kept the set alive with a kill before Rendic closed it for Lynn, 25-17.
The Greyhounds opened the second set with the first three points, including blocks involving Lynch and Jansen, as well as
Shelby Emich, but Lynn worked back through several ties and moved in front 16-13 after a Zara Rendic kill, an Ella Voorhees ace and a Greyhounds attack error. Lynch's kill later brought the Greyhounds within 17-15, but Lynn scored the next four points, capped by Audrey Shaw's kill, to stretch the margin to 21-15. The Greyhounds answered with five of the next six points, getting a Pflederer kill and Jansen block during the push before pulling within 22-20. Lynn closed from there with kills by Lira Pukl Verdel, Rendic and Alexia Radulovic around a Jansen kill, taking the set 25-21.
Lynn built an 8-2 lead in the third set behind five early kills and a block-assisted Greyhounds attack error. Pflederer,
Caitlin Blomberg,
Riley Laine and Portwood helped the Greyhounds work back into the set, and an attack error by Lynn trimmed the margin to 12-10. The Greyhounds stayed within two again at 14-12 after kills from Pflederer and Jansen, but Lynn scored the next four points to push the lead to 18-12. Lynn later stretched the margin to 22-13 and closed the set 25-17 on an Audrey Shaw kill.
